The United States is a Constitutional Republic. This means that our democratically elected officials must operate within the framework of the U.S. Constitution. At their inaguration, these officials must swear to protect the Constitution. Nowhere in the Constitution does it allow our elected officials to ignore it, in order to pursue their personal agenda, no matter how popular it may be. Our forefathers knew that there could be situations arise where that a tyrannical government could occur and therefore this government could attempt to trample on the peoples rights with a majority vote. Benjamin Franklin expressed this concept eloquently, regarding the 2nd Amendment . "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."
