Second Lieutenant Lawrence J. Franks went AWOL from the U.S. Army in order to serve in the French Foreign Legion. He had an exemplary record as a cadet at West Point and during his service in the L.E. In addition 2nd Lt. Franks turned himself in after honorably completing his tour of duty in the L.E.
Due to the rules of the UCMJ 2nd Lt. Franks was not allowed to provide a defense of depression and mental Illness during his court martial.
We humbly request that 2nd Lt. Franks sentence be pardoned. While his actions were inexcusable the continued incarceration of this young man serves no beneficial purpose to him, the Army or the citizens of the United States of America.
