Marine Corporal Robert E. Borchers (REB), age 93, experienced first-hand unspeakable horrors of combat in the tropical jungles of Guadalcanal. With a 45 caliber pistol on his belt he laid wire under fire and even at night behind enemy lines.
REB, was with the first wave of Marines to land in Japan, after the atom bombs were dropped and the peace treaty was signed.Young children were often the first Japanese who presented themselves to the conquers. REB’s family has a faded black-and-white snapshot of him kneeling to hand a chocolate bar to a very young and war-shocked child.
In 1946 REB was so happy about the end of the war and very anxious to return to Chicago to marry his sweetheart Lucy (died in 1982) and return to a relatively normal life and raise a family of two sons, a daughter, 8 g
