On September 29th, 2016, The Honorable Ray Mabus ordered, that effective immediately, The Navy will eliminate its 241 year old Enlisted Rating System. The U.S. Navy's enlisted occupational system is a product of more than 200 years of Naval evolution. As the Navy has changed so has the Navy's rating system. The first steamship, mine, radar, torpedo, aircraft carrier, and many other "firsts" all established a new era in the Navy, and each directly impacted the enlisted occupation structure. No such change in the US Navy has occurred to bring about such a monumental change to the Navy's personnel structure. After more than 200 years of evolution, today's Navy enlisted rating structure still plays a key role in career development, serves as a basis for training, detailing, and advancement.
