There should be mandatory 2-years' service required for every 18-year-old. This could be military service, peace corps, etc - any human service, conservation, or educational situation. This would benefit both youth and community. Young people should have an opportunity to begin giving back to the communities that raised and nurtured them, and get a taste of the real world. Many high school graduates are not ready for college; service can serve as a type of internship to help them decide on an education or career path. There is such a need for volunteerism in child/elder care, arts, environmental conservation, animal welfare. There are complications to develop such a program, but we already have the military - why not expand the idea of "service", and make it mandatory for every citizen?
