There is no standard to health care electronic records. If the gov't required compatibility of all electronic medical records, millions of dollars could be saved.
Each company could have a unique user interface, but, behind the scenes, there should be a system to electronically send the data to another health care provider for patient care.
The current system of sending and receiving medical records for the purpose of patient care is broken, making it easier to repeat a test, imaging study, and sometimes procedure than getting the previous study result from another facility.
