Due to the financial collapse and great recession the Fed and Treasury are engaged in counter-cyclical economic stimulation offering financial institutions near zero borrowing. The financial institutions have not passed these discounts on to credit card debtors in fact they raised to double or more the rates they charge even to customers who never miss or are late with their payments. As a result consumers are unable to or have great difficulty paying down their credit card debt and the financial institutions are gaining a huge unwarranted windfall which is either recouping their losses from bad investments or simply giving them undeserved corporate welfare eventually from the taxpayers. Laws and regulations should be established so that significant savings are passed on to consumers.
