require all immigrants to learn to speak English within their first year in the United States.

In a 1919 letter to the American Defense Society, President Theodore Roosevelt said, "We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people". We as Americans should honor that statement by requiring all new immigrants to learn English. Americans should not have to accomodate immigrants in schools and businesses by having to learn their language.
