All members of Congress should be required to complete their own taxes personally, & they should automatically all be audited. They should be prohibited from using tax professionals, other than commercially available software.
The tax code is so complicated that an entire industry has been created around understanding and applying it. It is so complicated that most congressmen cannot do their own taxes; even when their accountants do them on their behalf, there are omissions or incorrect application of deductions (see Are All Senators Free From Tax Error? by Kevin Hechtkopf). Until the people who decide our tax code have to live with it themselves, we will never have meaningful tax reform.
