The US needs to update DOT automotive lighting regulations to comply with UN Regulation 48 and require amber rear turn signals and one or two rear fog lamps.
Amber turn signals have a proven safety advantage over red, with higher visibility due to the color difference from brake lamps.
Rear fog lamps are bright red lights on the rear of a vehicle that a driver turns on in extreme weather conditions such has very heavy fog and very heavy snow. This prevents rear-end collisions due to increased visibility. Rear fog lights are generally 20x brighter than normal tail lights. They are to be installed as one light on the left or in the center of the vehicle, or two (one on each side), always 10cm from brake lights to avoid confusion.
Both of these lighting are required everywhere else.
