A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) aimed at the earth would be a potentially catastrophic event. An event similar to the 1859 "Carrington event" would not only devastate the power grid, but would also pose a significant risk to commercial and government operated nuclear power reactors. Such reactors would need to continue operating cooling systems for potentially weeks or months in order to keep reactors and spent fuel from potential meltdown.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission should require that every nuclear reactor operator prepare and implement a preparation plan aimed at, but not limited to:
*Assess current vulnerabilities
*Require that cooling systems operate in the aftermath of a CME.
*Store emergency fuel on site
*Store food and water for plant workers
