Require All Presidential Candidates to Demonstrate Understanding of Basic Economics

Created by J.R. on October 09, 2015

The candidates in this presidential election cycle--especially on the Republican side--have repeatedly shown that they lack even a basic grasp of fundamental economic concepts. Sweeping tax cuts without corresponding reductions in outlays will merely add to the federal deficit, despite what Trump, Bush, et al. claim. Projecting fantastical rates of economic growth in the face of overwhelming empirical evidence to the contrary is not a legitimate budget proposal. Some candidates, such as Ben Carson, appear not to understand even the definition of a basic term like "debt limit." It's time we require that aspirants to the highest political office in the land possess at least a high-school understanding of economics.
