Require that all schools in all districts allot a minimum of 45 minutes for a lunch period.

Created by H.O. on February 07, 2013

Most schools give their students about 20-25 minutes of lunch time, which has been shown to be ineffective for a number of reasons. A lunch period is not only a time for students to get their required meal during the school day but also a break from classes and a chance to socialize, a skill that they are improving during this time. Schools usually give the excuse that a shorter lunch means more time in classes, but they are overlooking many positive outcomes.
Students may spend about 10 minutes of their lunch just in the lunch lines. A longer lunch would give them the energy they need to continue the rest of the day. They wouldn't be in a rush, so instead of getting fast food they could eat healthier. Longer lunch periods would reduce the child obesity problem and improve their academics.
