Require Background Checks on Every Gun Purchase in the US, Including Gun Show Sales and Private Sales

Currently, about 40% of gun sales are completed without any background checks whatsoever. This petition asks that the White House administration and Congress pass relevant laws or executive orders to ensure that 100% of gun sales involve a background check.
We ask that background check requirements covering prior criminal history and mental health be extended to private sales by unlicensed dealers, including transactions at gun shows, and private sales between individuals.
The process of conducting background checks should be handled at the federal level. It should be made as simple and straightforward as possible in order to make compliance easy for lawful gun sellers and buyers. Severe penalties should be enacted for people skirting background checks- both buyers and sellers.
