According to the NHTSA, only 2% of all registered vehicles are motorcycles, but motorcycles account for 5% of highway fatalities per year. In addition, 80% of all motorcycles crashes result in injury or death.
Most motorcycles on the road cannot be heard in traffic until after they pass a vehicle. Drivers need a visible reminder to be aware of motorcycles in traffic. Requiring "Be Aware of Motorcycles" road signs would assist in reducing motorcycle accidents. It would ensure safe travel on a motorcycle by reducing injuries and loss of life.
While the "Watch for Motorcycles" bumper sticker campaign has had some success, reading a bumper sticker on a moving vehicle is also not safe. Large posted signs stating " Be Aware of Motorcycles" are needed on roads, highways and interstates.
