Cel phones contain an FM chip that allows free direct FM radio broadcast reception. Most cellular carriers do not and will not unlock the FM chip to allow reception. Unlocking the chip will put a radio in the hands of every cel phone user and is a matter of public safety during emergencies especially when cel towers are down such as during storms and will allow users to hear emergency radio broadcasts without a cel signal. It will also reduce cel data costs to users as a cellular signal is not necessary to access free radio. Pressure from the White House can lead carriers to change their policies and benefit the public.
