Currently, U.S. Cellular service providers have some capacity to turn off the FM radio chip that is embedded in many cellular devices. The chip is onboard but is not usable in any form, even with third party applications. There is no sufficient reason to have the chip turned off. In fact a compelling reason for leaving these enabled is for emergency circumstances, such as natural disasters, in which FM radio may be one of the only ways for individuals to receive information. If a cellular tower goes offline, or individuals are in a "dead zone", then this service can provide crucial information. In addition, FM radio chips use significantly less power than data streaming, which in turn provides the listener the ability to conserve battery in a long term emergency such as a hurricane.
