Require drivers over the age of 75 to have their vision tested before renewing their license.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2009, there were 28 fatal accidents for every 100,000 drivers over the age of 75. Despite the fact that there are less drivers over the age of 75, this rate is higher than with drivers from 25 to 74 years old. One cause of this higher rate may be due to declining vision. Vision, especially night vision, declines with age. Many senior citizens do not realize their vision is declining or they fail to have their eyes regularly checked. According to the American Medical Association, older drivers can be more "vulnerable to crashes in complex situations that require good visual perception, attention and rapid response." If the DMV required drivers over the age of 75 to have their eyesight tested, then this problem could be solved.
