Newborn screening procedures vary from state to state. We petition the White House to make an echocardiogram (non-invasive, detailed ultrasound of the heart) a required component of all newborn screenings in the U.S. in order to diagnose and treat critical congenital heart defects before the baby leaves the hospital. Echocardiograms reveal conditions that a simple pulse oximetry test may not always detect--which means they can save lives. Many congenital heart defects are treatable, but early detection helps healthcare professionals and parents to provide the best care possible.
