Recently, voter fraud and disenfranchisement concerns have clashed at the forefront of civil and political rights debates. Studies have shown, however, that voter identification laws disproportionately disenfranchise minority and working class voters due to accessibility and cost of obtaining ID.
In light of today's decision Shelby County v. Holder, it is clear that we will soon face a massive disenfranchisement. This petition proposes common sense requirements on these laws that will avoid disenfranchisement while remaining neutral to the issue of implementation of voter ID laws:
(a) No-cost provision of acceptable ID to all eligible voters.
(b) Accessibility to voters who work during business hours or lack transportation.
(c) Other provisions necessary to avoid disenfranchisement.
