Schools are not providing adequate time for children to have unstructured play. Play is an important part of learning, health, and development. Numerous studies show how important play is to children's growth. Also on a basic human rights level, they work hard all day and deserve a break at least once a day. Since schools are not providing it on their own, it needs to be government mandated that every child be guaranteed an adequate recess.
My kindergarten child attends school for 7 hours a day, and is only allowed a maximum of 10 minutes a day of recess. I say maximum, because it is combined with his lunch time, 20 minutes total, if he decides to actually eat his lunch, and take longer than the 10 minutes he gets no recess time. This needs to change. Children need time to play.
