The FBI first began tracking crime statistics under the Nixon administration. Data on murder, rape, burglary and other crimes were for the first time, have been collected and annual reports have been issued. This centralized data collection on crime in America is a standard that is over 40 years old and an essential component in understanding crime trends and drafting responses to crime in our communities.
Since the inception of collecting national data on crime, crimes committed by police officers are willfully omitted from the FUN data collection.
In 1996, only 1 out of 284 cases of police misconduct reported to the FBI office on civil rights made it trial. These statistics are not acceptable in any other area of law enforcement.
It is time to correct this terrible problem.
