A growing body of evidence indicates that added sugar in foods and beverages is contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the US. Naturally occurring sugar (such as that found in fruits and dairy products) does not contribute to this problem, but unfortunately food labeling does not currently distinguish between these two kinds of sugar. This makes it difficult for consumers to make informed choices about how much added sugar they are including in their diets. We need a requirement that food labeling clearly state how much added sugar is contained per serving of a product, not just the total amount of added and naturally occurring sugar per serving.
