One in seven American households faces not having enough food to eat, yet grocery stores throw away more than 13 billion tons of edible food every year. France has enacted legislation requiring supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities or for use as animal feed to prevent food waste. Other countries in Europe are exploring similar alternatives. We ask the President to take on the issue of food waste, giving stores the ability and the legal responsibility to provide food that they cannot sell to charities that feed the hungry.
