Recording the ballistic signature of a rifle or handgun will allow the weapon to be traced to manufacture and seller absent a serial number when used in the commission of a crime or when confiscated by law enforcement. This additional record will allow law enforcement to identify straw gun buyers and business or individuals who sell guns to persons who, under current law, can not legally purchase or own a gun. This requirement will have no effect on legal gun purchases or ownership.
