Every recent Federal administration, including the current one has tried to deal with the problem of gun violence. Both parties hurl the same meaningless arguments at each other while the battle in the streets continues.
The cost to society and to families is astronomical. Gun owners claim, perhaps correctly, that most are ethical and responsible. Car owners too usually don't deliberately run people down on purpose or drive without headlights.
If you want to own a car in the USA, you have to purchase liability insurance. Guns need to have the same requirement. If you are caught driving without insurance, your car gets impounded and you pay a huge fine. Kill a pedestrian without insurance, and your life is devastated. The same responsibilities ought to apply to firearms as well.
