The sky is pitch black when students wake up for school in the morning. Their eyes are open but their brains are stalled, with sunrise still an hour away. Most high schools begin at about 7:30am, but recent complaints from students and teens have brought about the idea of changing the hours of the high school day. The goal would be to begin the school day at 8:15am or later. Supporters say a growing body of sleep research shows that teens are biologically wired for later bedtimes and later wake-ups. And studies show that lack of sleep is linked to lower academic performance, absenteeism, and an increased risk of depression and car crashes. By creating a later start time to the school day, it will result in better academic performance and less stress for students around the world.
