In 2006, Honda re-designed the Civic Hybrid drive system for the 2006-2011 models. The gas engine supplies 84 horse power, the battery supplies the remaining 30, totalling 114 horse power.
Honda realized that IMA hybrid batteries were starting to die prematurely and had to be replaced under warranty. In response to this poor manufacturing, a software update was released which decreases the use of the battery, thus extending its life. This decrease meant less horse power and made the car dangerous to drive. The main brake system relies on the battery functioning properly and often will not work with the update. In addition, the lack of power that the battery would normally provide, creates a dangerous freeway acceleration, often producing max acceleration 0-60 mph in over a minutes time
