Depending on a single judge’s decision and "feeling," a permanent life-altering outcome is determined for children. We teachers use arena judging/scoring to make sure we are being as fair as possible in the scores we give students although their are individual differences especially in writing. After grading student work as a team, we see more consistency in our scores. Consistency is what is necessary and to establish it in custody matters judges should be required to use arena judging, peer review, and/or a rubric(s) in the state courts before putting a court order into place. I have met individuals throughout the custody process who have shared their custody outcomes with me and have found huge discrepancies in the decisions made by judges throughout the United States.
