A mental and emotional health check should be required before being able to obtain a firearm. Along with background checks. Alcoholics and drug addicts shouldn't be allowed to obtain a firearm until proven they are no longer addicted to said drug and are mentally stable. Should there really be a need for a schizophrenic, mentally insane person to own a firearm?
Furthermore, for teens and children should either have a check for mental or emotional issues or be watched by a responsible adult who has had a possession of or has past experience with firearms in order to use them. This would decrease the number of suicidal, insane, or unstable citizens owning guns along with the benefit of records of who owns guns or possibly owns guns to resolve murders.
