Recently Rep. Lamar Smith was nominated to be the new chair of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Smith, a law school graduate, is clearly unqualified to hold a top position in science policy, lacking any relevant experience or education. Smith and other members of this committee disagree with the strong consensus held by the scientific community on numerous topics. It is doubtful that these representatives will be able to make objective decisions on science policy. Other House Republicans include physicians, scientists and engineers, all of whom would be more qualified.
Science and technology are absolutely vital to the economy and growth of our nation. Potential members of this committee should be required to meet minimum standards of education or experience.
