Being an elected official/politician, is a privilege. It should not ever be considered a full-time job or occupation. Politicians make substantial salaries, live in luxurious homes and get catered to left and right. When did representation become a job? I always thought it was an honor to represent the people??? If politicians didn't get paid, or at least get a minimal wage, the candidates would be running for the right reasons. Instead of seeing dollar signs and prestige. Take the politicians old salaries, and apply those funds to something useful...the national debt, charities, relief funds etc. But instead, we are represented by folks who think their "abilities" and "attributes" are worth six digits a year. Do you think they're worth that much?
