The Purpose of this petition is to bring to the government’s attention their overlooking of a working mother’s right to maternity leave after the birth of her child. Currently, The United States of America does not require an employer to provide any kind of paid maternity leave to their employees. For government employees, the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993: “There is no provision in law or regulation that permits the use of sick leave to care for a healthy newborn, bond with a healthy child, or for other child care responsibilities” (US Dept. of Labor), meaning that they let you take some form of leave for the birth of a child, but it does not specify an amount of time that mothers have for giving birth.
