Oregon is #1 in the country for prescription drug abuse, suicides, and overdoses. This problem is rooted in the prescriber who has little to no education in prescribing addictive medicines. In Oregon, there are only 58 doctors (2 in Bend, where I live) who are licensed with ABAM (American Board of Addiction Medicine), who are qualified to prescribe addictive medicines.
We can turn our country's drug problems around if we first realize physicians are not qualified to prescribe addictive drugs. The public is paying the price for this inadequacy.
I would like to see the end of physicians receiving money from pharmaceutical companies. This encourages physicians to use the public as repeat customers for the sake of retaining the physician/pharma relationship.
