Require the President and all of the House and Senate to forfeit half of their taxpayer-funded salary

It has come to our attention that the government of the United States is demonstrably unable to even put in place a budget to "run our government". That being the case it is my humble opinion, as an American citizen, that our government officials should do what the rest of us do. They should give up some of the less-than-frugal spending that our government does. They should do this firstly by forfeiting at least half of their salaries. How is it that Congress can vote themselves a raise while we are about to be driven off a "fiscal cliff"? If our spending is so out of control, let's start with the basics and cut half off their salaries. I'm sure they could do without half of it, since half of the President's salary is more than most of us make in a year!!!
