Being Commander in Chief is one of the primary responsibilities of the office of the President. The military has a unique persona and culture that is alien to most that have never experienced it themselves. I personally did not like serving under a CiC with no military background, and the election of the current one was a factor in my leaving the service. Service members don't like being led by someone that has never walked in their shoes, at any level in the chain of command.
