I believe that by making debit card purchases show the remaining balance of the bank account associated with the card, consumers can 1.) better track their spending 2.) more effectively save and spend money 3.) avoid losing money for frivolous reasons.
I don't believe that instituting such a concept would be too difficult; it's simply a matter of additional information being added to the receipt; much in the way that many receipts will say things like "have a nice day."
Such a requirement could only benefit the consumer, should they opt in during a transaction. A simple additional option on card readers that says "show remaining balance on receipt?" I mean, the card machines have more than enough buttons on them, so why not?
