In the wake of the horrific Chattanooga bus crash in which five young innocent children died, the lack of seatbelts may have contributed to the unusually high number of causalities. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures' website, only California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Texas have laws requiring seatbelts on school buses. Therefore, we the people call upon Congress to act in this issue and require ALL school buses to have functioning seatbelts. The seatbelts should be checked yearly when the bus is inspected by their local Department of Motor Vehicles agency to make sure they are functioning properly.
