With the recent decision by the Administration to open up additional combat roles to female servicemembers in mind, we ask that the President request a study from the Defense Department to ascertain whether female servicemembers who might have distinguished themselves in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan might have otherwise been eligible for the Medal of Honor except for their gender, and to consider awarding the Medal to any such candidates.
Historically, the United States has not recognized servicemembers based on their combat record equally. The recognition of WWII African American MoH candidates was relatively recently, in the 1990s. We ask a similar study be undertaken to identify potential female candidates from our most recent conflicts.
