Require Senior Citizens to be Periodically Evaluated for Their Ability to Safely and Responsibly Operate a Motor Vehicle

Created by V.C. on November 16, 2012

This petition is to make it mandatory that once a person reaches the age of 65, he/she must be evaluated by the state's Department of Motor Vehicles every five years to determine if he/she is still capable of safely and responsibly operating a motor vehicle. This review shall continue until he/she reaches the age of 80, at which time the review process shall be once every two years.

The purpose is not to prohibit senior citizens from driving, but to ensure the safety of both the driver and the community. Driving under the influence is prohibited because of decreased reaction time, vision and cognitive ability - all of which are also results of advancing age.
