Anyone who has eaten lunch in a public school knows the cause of childhood obesity. Students are fed the nutritional equivalent of McDonald's every day, and unhealthy foods are consistently cheaper and more readily available than healthy alternatives.
The Obama administration has made laudable, but misguided attempts to combat this problem. This includes a recently legislated bake sale ban, and snack regulations that loom on the horizon.
Both of these solutions completely miss the point. The fight against childhood obesity must begin with the pizza and fries served to students, not supplementary baked goods and chips. Cracking down on side dishes will not stop obesity.
This petition will ask the federal government to mandate simple health standards to be implemented by the states.
