Paying an additional principle payment to your student loans should not be made harder simply because it means the Servicer no longer gets to charge interest on those extra dollars. Through both Sallie Mae and Nelnet, if you make a payment for more than the amount due, they hold that payment and apply it towards your next month's bill instead of the principle. There is no option to apply the additional payment to principle when paying online. You literally have to sit down and write two separate checks every month. All student loan services should be required to provide this "functionality" through their web payment portals. The attempt to be responsible should not be rewarded as a hindrance. (Stop allowing student loan servicers to CAPITALIZE on this lack of payment options!)
