As a country, are trying to control the flow of firearms into the hands of criminals or others that would do harm. I think an easy and somewhat patriotic step would be to limit the purchase of firearms in the United States to citizens only. I am not sure what proof would be required, but it could be current passport or birth certificate or other document, but it seems like a simple way to solve the worry that illegal immigrants would have easy access to weaponry. It certainly will not solve all the issues, but is certainly a step in the right direction.
