Volkswagen and Audi have admitted installing software that allowed diesel engines to pass smog tests by temporarily lowering the output of polluting nitrogen oxides from diesel engines when the exhaust from the cars was being tested for compliance with automobile pollution standards.
As part of any settlement between the government and Volkswagen and Audi, we ask that the car makers be required to sell at least 50,000 electric vehicles in the U.S. within 3 years of the settlement.
We expect that this would bring down the cost of electric cars, and would help to offset the pollution caused by the fraudulent software.
