Hefty fines, even those in the millions and billions of dollars, have proved ineffective in curbing violations of state and federal law by corporations. The corporations go right back to those or similar illegal practices and pass the cost of the fines off as Cost Of Business [COB] to their customers in the form of higher prices. Who knows, they may even use the fines as a loss in computing their state and federal taxes.
Corporations will never learn the straight and narrow road to good corporate citizenship until they are threatened with their very survival just like the threat individuals face when they murder someone.
It is now time to not only levy heavy fines against the corporate criminals, but also indict corporate officers and board of directors on criminal charges.
