Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta will announce a policy change in January 2013 which will allow women to serve in front line combat roles. Presumably, this will also permit women to make application to certain combat units including elite commando teams.
Historically, the purpose of conscription (a draft) was to provide able-bodied males to serve in the armed forces, particularly during times of conflict. The majority of these men were placed in combat billets. If women are capable of serving in the military, particularly in combat roles, then requiring them to register with the Selective Service System is consistent with their mission to "provide trained and untrained personnel to the DoD in the event of a national emergency". This will also further efforts to ensure equality.
