There are over 3500 infant deaths annually caused by SBS, and 85 percent of those are parents who were first-time or new parents who did not know, what to do, what to expect, or how to react to an inconsolable infant.
We can reduce that number by requiring a training class for new and first-time parents to teach and remind them of such things like, cry it out, back to sleep, infant cpr, helping a choking infant, knowing when to call support, etc...
We require hospitals to car seat test before discharge to protect the baby, why not parent training. The hospital should not be required to take up the cost of this however, it should rest on the insurance comany to cover this as a requirement of coverage for new born care.
