Currently many locks on classroom doors require a key to be secured. This can lead to tragedies when the teacher either lacks the necessary key or is unable to retrieve the key in time to secure the door. Classrooms in both Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook suffered this design flaw.
This petition seeks new federal regulation that all deadbolt locks in classroom doors must be able to be secured by turning a locking arm. A key must still be required to lock/unlock the door from the outside, but a key should not be necessary to secure the room from inside.
