Benzodiazepine abuse has become a widespread epidemic all over the world. Benzodiazpeine medications, like Xanax and Valium, are well known for their high potentials for abuse and addiction. Benzodiazepines are currently found in Schedule IV of the Controlled Substances Act, meaning that they have a potential for abuse limited to drugs in Schedules I-III, they have an accepted medical use, and that they have a potential for addiction limited to drugs in Schedules I-III. The Controlled Substances Act is based on science from the 1970's. We now know that the abuse and addiction potentials for benzodiazepines meet those of Schedule II substances.
