Currently, cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act. This classification rules out the substance as having no redeeming medicinal value. With recent studies showing that cannabis can most certainly be used as a viable form of medicine, this petition proposes to reschedule it as a Schedule II controlled substance. This would make it legal for those with a valid medical prescription to possess, while penalizing those who use, cultivate, or distribute it outside of a pharmaceutical context. It would most certainly be a more just method of controlling the substance, putting it under the same scrutiny and regulation as substances such as cocaine, morphine, and oxycodone, leaving those who find legitimate medical value in it at peace.
